I was really taken aback by the show by Ryan MacFarland at Charles Bank Gallery on Bowery in their basement project space. His approach to a really traditional subject matter (landscape) is simultaneously painterly and expressive and yet hard-edged and conceptual. This triptych of water was especially a favorite - it looks like a Richter or Vija Celmins from across the room but when you get close you can really see the grain unique to a photographic image which must be important to the artist since it appears repeatedly in the work in this show.
